To remove odor from a car, find the source and clean it out, because the smell lives in whatever is holding it: a spill soaked into the carpet pad, smoke film on the headliner and glass, dog oils in the seat fabric, or water under the floor. Air fresheners and baking soda only cover it. Once the source is gone, a deodorizing treatment can take care of what is left in the air and the fabric.
The hard part is figuring out which source you have. The kind of smell, and when you notice it, usually tells you.
What is causing the smell in my car?
Start with your nose and the calendar. A smell that is always there points to something in the cabin. A smell that shows up after rain points to a leak. A smell that only comes out when the fan runs points to the vents. Match yours to the table, then pull the mats and look underneath before you buy anything.

How do you get a smoke smell out of a car?
Smoke is the toughest one because it does not stay in one spot. It settles on every surface as a sticky film, so the headliner, the seat fabric, the seat belts, the vents, and the inside of the glass all hold it. Researchers writing in Environmental Health Perspectives describe a study that found nicotine in the dust and on the dashboards of smokers' cars, and still found it in cars whose owners had stopped smoking in them for a year. Airing the car out does not lift that film.
At home, wipe every hard surface, clean the inside of the windows (that yellow haze is smoke), wash or replace the floor mats, and check the cabin air filter the way your owner's manual says. On a car that was smoked in for years, the smell usually comes back from the headliner and seats. That is where a deep clean followed by a full-cabin odor treatment earns its keep.
How do you get dog smell out of a car?
Dog smell is mostly hair and skin oil packed into fabric and carpet. Vacuum slowly in two directions, pull the seats forward to reach the rails, and wash anything the dog lies on. If the hair is gone and the car still smells like the dog, the oils are in the fabric itself. Shampoo and extraction pull them out of the seats and carpet. An accident is a different job: it soaks into the pad, and it has to be flushed out, not sprayed over.
Why does my car smell musty?
Musty almost always means water. A clogged sunroof drain, leaf-packed cowl drains under the windshield, a worn door seal, or a wet spare tire well can keep the carpet pad damp for weeks, and the smell gets worse every time it rains. Press down hard on the carpet near the door sills and under the front seats. If it feels cool or damp, you found it.

Do air fresheners or baking soda get rid of car odor?
Not really. An air freshener puts a stronger smell on top of the bad one, and when it fades, the old smell is still there. Baking soda in an open box can soak up a little from the air in a mild case, but it cannot reach a spill in the pad or smoke film on the headliner. Fragrance also hides the one clue you have that something is still wet or dirty.
The odor treatment I use is different. Full-Cabin Odor Elimination uses chlorine dioxide, which goes after the odor at its source instead of covering it. It works best after the cabin is cleaned, because no treatment keeps up with a spill that is still sitting in the carpet.

When should you call a detailer for car odor?
Call when you have cleaned what you can reach and the smell is still there, or when the source is in the seat foam, the carpet pad, or the headliner. An interior detail covers the vacuum and full wipe-down. Shampoo, stain removal, pet hair, and odor treatment are add-ons, so tell me what the smell is and how long it has been there, and I will tell you which ones fit.
