To dry wet car carpet, get the water out first, then move air through the cabin until the padding underneath is dry, not just the top. Pull the mats, soak up or wet vac the standing water, and use sun, the heater with the A/C on, or a fan with the doors open. Aim to have it dry within 48 hours, and check under the surface, because the foam pad holds water long after the carpet feels fine.
It usually starts with a window cracked during a storm, a clogged sunroof drain, or a winter of slush melting off boots. Here is how I would handle it, and when drying it yourself is not enough.
Why does car carpet stay wet so long?
Car carpet is not like the rug in your living room. Under the fabric sits a thick layer of foam or felt padding that quiets road noise, and under that is the metal floor. Water soaks through the carpet, settles in the pad, and has nowhere to drain.
The top dries in the sun and feels fine to your hand while the pad stays soaked. That is why the musty smell shows up a week later. On many cars, wiring also runs under the carpet along the sills and under the seats, which is one more reason not to let water sit there.
Wet car carpet: how to dry it step by step
Figure out where the water came from. A window left open is easy. If you cannot explain it, suspect a leak (sunroof drains, door seals, the windshield, the A/C drain) and get that checked, or you will be drying it again next week.
Take everything out. Floor mats, bags, papers, gym clothes, and car seats all hold water and block air.
Pull out the standing water. A wet/dry shop vac works best. Press the nozzle hard into the carpet and move slowly. No shop vac? Stand on old towels and swap them until they come up almost dry.
Move air. Park in the sun with the doors or windows open. If it is cold or raining, run the heater on the floor setting with the A/C button on and the windows cracked. The A/C pulls moisture out of the cabin air.
Bring in a fan for a soaked car. Put a box fan in an open door blowing across the floor, with the car under cover. A small dehumidifier inside the car helps too.
Test the pad, not the surface. Kneel on a folded paper towel in the lowest spot of the footwell for a few seconds. If it comes up damp, keep going. Mats go back in only when it stays dry.
One safety note if you use the heater: run the engine outside. The CDC warns never to run a car or truck inside a garage attached to a house, even with the garage door open.
How long does it take for car carpet to dry?
It depends on how much water got in and how much air you can move. A damp spot from wet boots can be gone in an afternoon with the windows down. A footwell that took on rain overnight can take a day or more even with a fan running, and longer in cold, damp weather. Fall and winter in Morris County work against you: cool nights, wet mornings, and a car parked outside on a wet driveway.
The EPA's mold course says to dry wet carpet and backing within 48 hours, using a wet vacuum to remove the water and fans and a dehumidifier to speed things up. It also points out that a wet vacuum alone will not dry carpet. You need the airflow afterward.

Do baking soda, rice, or kitty litter dry car carpet?
Not really. They can soak up a little surface water or knock down a smell, but they never reach the pad underneath. Baking soda in damp carpet also tends to clump and leave white residue in the fibers that takes a lot of vacuuming to get out.
Air fresheners are worse, because they hide the one warning sign you have. If the car smells clean because of a pine tree on the mirror, you cannot tell whether the pad dried. Towels, a wet vac, and moving air do the real work.
When should you pull the carpet or call a pro?
If the carpet squishes when you press on it, if water keeps showing up after it dried, or if the car sat wet for more than a couple of days, the pad may be too far gone to dry in place. The EPA's advice for soaked carpet is to pull the carpet and pad off the floor and dry them with fans, and it notes that wet porous materials with mold growing on them may have to be thrown out. In a car, pulling the carpet means taking out seats and trim, which is a job for a body shop or dealer.

How do you keep car carpet from getting wet again?
Keep sunroof drains clear. With the glass open, pour a little water into a corner of the sunroof tray. It should drain away quickly. If it pools, a drain is likely clogged.

Do not leave wet gear in the car overnight. Towels, umbrellas, and sports bags keep feeding water into the floor.
Check the floor after a big storm if your car sits outside, especially under trees where leaves clog drains.
